CYANOTYPE PRINTING PROCESS
• The Wearable Art Cyanotype Tee is printed by the artist using cyanotype chemistry, digital negatives, and sunlight
• Due to the nature of printing with cyanotype chemistry and sunlight, print placement, saturation, and chemical printing area may vary. Cyanotype t-shirts are one-of-a-kind, which is part of the fun!
• Variations are limited for cyanotype tees because I run a small business that can have only so much inventory. If you are looking for something specific, feel free to make a custom order–just expect it to take roughly 5-10 days for me to print.
WASHING CYANOTYPE CLOTHING
When putting your clothing in the laundry machine, here are the things to look out for, which create irreversible effects:
• Contact with any substance of alkaline pH (pH > 7). Please note, most laundry detergents contain alkaline ingredients.
• Water and high ionic strength solutions. If your laundry detergent contains anionic surfactants, that could be a concern.
If you want to wash your cyanotypes, my advice is to hand wash using a neutral and non-ionic soap. The closest thing I have been able to find is Dr. Bronner's Pure Castile Liquid Soap, which still contains citric acid, which is ionic and acidic.
Anecdotally, I have washed my own cyanotype t-shirt multiple times using the “Seventh Generation: Clean with Purpose” detergent and have not noticed a change in print quality. However, if a little yellowing would make you devastated, don’t buy cyanotype wearable art! You have been warned :~)
ADDITIONAL CARE INSTRUCTIONS
• According to Jacquard (the chemistry brand I use): "Cyanotype prints are archival. However, yellowing may occur if prints are exposed to phosphates or high pH solutions. Cyanotype printed fabrics should always be laundered in cold water using non-phosphate detergents. Use care while handling cyanotype prints, as sweat and hand oils may also cause discoloration. "
• Cyanotypes do fade in sunlight, however, you can reverse this process by leaving your cyanotype in a dark, airy location (you want your cyanotype to have access to oxygen), as this will reverse the sunlight-induced fading. After 5 days, the fading is reduced by 99%, essentially returning the cyanotype to its original state, if not slightly lighter than it originally was.
